Last Wednes-day VMI and the Glasgow endowment joined forces to host a reading by poet Steve Scafidi in the W&L library. Mr. Scafidi is a na-tive of Virginia, but lives now in Summit Point, West Virginia where he works as a cabinet maker. He earned his master of fine arts de-gree from Arizona State University. His poetry has appeared in many different publications, and he has published two books includ-ing the winner of the 2002 Levis Reading Prize, Sparks from a Nine-Pound Hammer, and For Love of Common Word. His third book is ex-pected to be published soon. Scafidi’s work cov-ers a variety of subject mat-ter ranging from the birth of his child to important figures in American History. His po-etry often has the feeling of a folk tale in its descrip-tions of the small town life and its unique places and characters. He even writes about a talking crow. Mr. Scafidi read nine poems from his as-sorted work. The poems included, “10 Letter Word for a Lucky Man,” “Some-times there’s a Shit Smell Everywhere,” Song for Sun-day Morning,” and “Ode to Rosa Parks.” He also read 1 poem written by the Irish poet Seamus Heaney, in honor of his recent passing. Several of the po-ems read by Mr. Scafidi are to be published in his upcoming collection cen-tered on Abraham Lincoln. “I was never re-ally sure if I was from the North or the South,” said Mr. Scafidi, “But in the town I grew up in everyone had pictures of Lee above their fireplaces, and the first per-son I told that I was writ-ing about Lincoln cursed as soon as I said his name.” Scafidi spoke dur-ing the reading of a process he believed was important to all writers; establishing a voice as a citizen of one’s own country. He expressed this idea in his poem “Ode to Rosa Parks,” which he said might strike a spe-cial resonance with cadets. Though many of the cadets in attendance were there only to fulfill a class requirement, Mr. Sca-fidi’s easy going nature, and powerful, relevant poetry ensured that the event was engaging to all present. “It was a nice change of pace,” said one second classman. “Id like to see more things like this offered to cadets.” Though the major-ity in attendance were ca-dets, there was a strong showing of W&L students as well. Many cadets were glad to have a rare chance to interact with students outside the Institute, and agree that future events jointly planned by VMI and W&L would be a good addi-tion to the year’s calendar. Mr. Scafidi’s poetry is available for reading on-line through various sourc-es including connotation-press. com, and blackbird. vcu.edu. His work is avail-able for purchase through the Louisiana State Uni-versity Press and through all major book sellers.
