The VMI Corps of Cadets received a rare op-portunity when the Repub-lican presidential candidate, Mitt Romney visited post this past Monday October 8, 2012. Romney deliv-ered his much anticipated foreign policy speech in the Hall of Valor at VMI. ROMNEY DELIVERS FOREIGN Before Romney ad-dressed the Corps, General Peay ’62 gave the opening remarks. General Peay felt honored that Romney had chosen VMI as the backdrop for his speech and noted the relevancy of Romney’s ad-dress to VMI. General Peay explained that many VMI cadets either commission as officers into the U.S. armed forces or pursue careers in the national security or busi-ness fields, and still serve their country in some capac- The Cadet, student newspaper of the Virginia Military Institute, was estab-lished in the Fall of 1907 and has been continued since that time. Follow-ing General Peay, Congress-man Bob Goodlatte shared a prayer for VMI cadets who will join the military, cur-rent VMI graduates serv-ing abroad and all service-men and women in harm’s way. The current Governor of Virginia, Bob McDonnell, formally introduced Gover-nor Romney. Governor Mc- Donnell looked forward to the new graduating class of 2013 and remarked on the disposition of VMI cadets as “incredibly dedicated to the cause of honor and service.” As Romney stepped on took the stage he was greeted by a warm stand-ing ovation by the cadets. The audience consisted of First class cadets, and sec-ond and third class cadets that have earned academic stars (received for earning over a 3.5 GPA for two con-secutive semesters) “The only way human beings can win a war is to prevent it.” Mitt Romney quoted VMI’s own George C. Marshall in the opening of his address to the Corps of Cadets. Governor Romney first discussed the terrorist acts on September 11, 2012 in Libya as well as the “an-ti- American riots in nearly two dozen other countries, mostly in the Middle East, but also in Africa and Asia.” Romney continued his dis-cussion on our foreign policy in the Middle East explain-ing that our relationship with our biggest ally in the region, Israel, has “suffered great strains”. The Gover-nor said that he wants “no daylight in between the U.S. and Israel, he also wanted to reverse the disintegrat-ing relationship between the United States and Isra-el. Romney also wanted to make it clear to the Iranian government that their nu-clear development program would not be tolerated. Rom-ney will try to enforce this by “tighten[ing] the sanc-tions we currently have”. The United States must intervene in Syria, al-lowing them to defeat the oppressive regime of Assad and develop a positive influ-ence with a nation that “sits at the heart of the Middle East”. The timeline in Rom-ney’s withdrawal in Afghani-stan is nearly the same as President Obama’s and there are very little mentioned differences to their plans other than rhetorical argu-ments.
