VOLUME LXV Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Virginia December 1, 1973 Number 13 New Concessionaire Agreement Reached The Concessions Council met recently and approved the new five year Concessionaire Agreement between VMI and Mr. Charles Turner, Following this action a copy of the new Agreement was sent to the Superintendent for review and approval. A final decision is expected on that within two weeks. There were a few changes made in the Agreement, but basically it remained the same. One of the changes concerned the percentage of the total, monthly gross sales which is paid to VMI by Mr. Turner. In the original Agreement, which was begun in 1968, the per-centage was twelve percent and did not include the income from vending machine sales. The new Agreement calls for a payment on the total, monthly gross sales of ten percent and this includes the vending Aiachine sales. Also, in the old Agreement an additional payment was made to VMI for each additional $25,000 of gross sales which exceeded $350,000 in total gross sales for the fiscal year. That was paid according to the following: $375,000 to $400,000 - 1 per cent $400,001 to $425,000 - 2 per cent 425,001 to $450,000 - 3 per cent $450,001 to $475,000 - 4 per cent $475,001 to $500,000 - 5 per cent $500,000 and above - 6 per cent. According to the new Agreement, additional payments are made on each $50,000 of gross sales which exceeds $450,000 for the fiscal year in accordance with the following: $450,000 to $500,000 - 1 per cent $500,001 to $5SO.OOO - 2 per cent $550,001 to $600,000 - 3 per cent $600,001 to $650,000 - 4 per cent $650,001 to $700,000 - 5 per cent $700,001 and above - 6 per cent. There was a change in the paragraph of the Agreement which deals with prohibiting discrimination against any employee, or applicant, for employment. The old Agreement stated that there could be no discrimination becuase of race, creed, color, or national origin. The new Agreement restates this to say that there will be no discrimination, in any way, because of sex, age, race, religion, national origin, political affiliation, or other non-merit, job related'factors. The old Agreement had in-cluded the Cleaning and Pressing Shop and Secondhand Clothing Store sales as com-prising part of the Cadet Canteen. However, these two operations were taken over by VMI at the beginning of the year and thus they were no included in the new Agreement. These changes were the only major ones made in the Con-cessionaire Agreement. The Agreement will again come up for renewal in 1978. This will be the final issue of the VMI CADET for the first semester. The Staff of the Cadet wishes all of its readers a Merry Christmas and the happiest of New Years. We remind all of our friends to drive safely over this holiday season, and look forward to another year of service in 1974. XMAS CONCERT The VMI Glee Club's traditional Christmas concert is tentatively scheduled for Monday, December 10 at 8 p.m. In past years civilians have been allowed in barracks for this concert. This year the carols will be Silent Night, sung in both Germany and English, 0' Come All Ye Faithful, Angels We have Heard On High, Cantate Domino by Hans Leo Von Hassler, Joy to the World arranged by George A. Biester, and many more. The Director of the Glee Club this year is Cadet Robert C. Braren. The 50 cadets in the Glee Club have performed at Southern Seminary Jr. College and at the Augusta County Women's Society. Many plans are being made for the second semester including a trip to New York and New Jersey for four days. The Glee Club will be accepting new members for the second semester. Brig. Gen. Frank McCarthy, VMI '33. is former Assistant Secretary of State, and producer of the Oscar winning movie Patton. General McCarthy will be the featured speaker at the Third An-nual Foodball Awards Program, tonight, at 7:00 p.m. in Cocke Hall. Receiving awards at the banquet will be seniw safety Gene Williams (Honorable mention All-America, All Southern Con-ference. S. C. player of the week); Andy Dearman (Honourable mention All-America. All Southern Conference). Junior offensive tackle. The Boys In The Band The VMI Theatre will begin work on another play soon after the beginning of next semester. The Boys in the Band by Mort Crowley will be the play produced. Bob Carrere, the director, would like as many people as possible to read the play before auditioning. It makes tryout readings much more effective when those who are reading for parts have an idea of what is going on in the play and who the characters are. Scripts may be borrowed from Dr. James B. Davis' office after Christmas furlough. As always, everyone and anyone is welcome to attend the tryouts, even if you have no acting experience. There is a lot more to putting on a play than acting. If you would like to help on one of the stage crews, the Theatre has jobs for elec-tricians, carpenters, and ar-tists, props people, and lots of others. The dates for tryouts are 15, 16, 17 of Jan., at 7:30, in room 318 Scott Shipp Hall.
